St Ann teachers 'let their hair down'

Approximately 80 teachers from St Ann enjoyed the day off from classroom activities as they celebrated Teacher's Day, thanks to mayor of St Ann's Bay Desmond Gilmore, with help from Tankweld.

The teachers, from infant to secondary levels, gathered at Pearly Beach to have lunch and a day of doing nothing - just laughing, chatting, and enjoying the cool Caribbean Sea.

"They dance if they want to dance, have lunch, have a drink or two. What we try to do is give them a day where they can let their hair down. We take them out of the public's eye so they can just enjoy themselves," Gilmore told The Gleaner.

The mayor says those who assisted understood and recognised the tremendous task that teachers have been performing, so each year at this time, they try to show appreciation.

Gilmore said: "I want to express my gratitude to Mr Chris Bicknell of Tankweld, who has been on board with us from last year and has been one of the major sponsors in terms of getting us to fit this bill. He believes in what we're doing as we show our gratitude to our teachers. He's on board with us this year again. I also want to thank a few of the chairmen from some of the schools who have contributed. I just want to say thanks to them and all who assisted in any way."
