The dangers faced by motorcyclists are again being underscored following two recent fatal crashes and a serious collision yesterday that left two persons hospitalised.

Deaths and injuries linked to motorcycles continue to draw concern, with the most recent incident occurring about 11:15 a.m on Wednesday along the Stony Hill main road in the vicinity of Lipscombe Avenue, involving a Zamco motorcycle and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Both the motorcyclist and the female pillion rider sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to hospital, where they remain in serious condition up to press time.

Reports from the police indicate that the motorcyclist suffered fractures to his hip, ankle and knees, while the pillion rider also sustained several fractures.

Both were bleeding profusely and in excruciating pain, baffling first responders who, while wanting to help, did not know how to treat the injuries before them.

After roughly 30 minutes, the badly injured crash victims were gently placed into the back of a police service vehicle.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.

The incident follows two separate fatal crashes involving motorcyclists.

In one case, 25-year-old Tevin Nelson succumbed to injuries on Monday, several days after being involved in a collision on January 22.

This fatal crash occurred in Tavern, Papine.

The Gleaner understands that the crash involved two motorcycles that collided while both were being operated by their respective rider.

Nelson was hospitalised following the incident but later died from his injuries.

In the other fatal crash on Tuesday, 18-year-old student Ahjay Wilson, of a St Mary address, was killed on the spot in a collision along the Crab Hall main road about 9:30 p.m.

Police reports indicate that Wilson was riding his motorcycle when it collided with a grey Toyota Axio.

Meanwhile, preliminary data shows that three motorcyclists have died since the start of January, while no pillion riders have been killed so far this month.

This contrasts with the corresponding period last year, when six motorcyclists and two pillion riders lost their lives.

Overall, road fatalities are down by 31 per cent year-on-year, with nine fewer deaths recorded up to January 28, compared to the same period in 2025.

To date, 20 lives have been lost in 15 fatal collisions across the island.

Despite the decline, motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable and high-risk road users, along with private motor vehicle drivers and pedestrians.

These groups accounted for the majority of road fatalities last year, prompting continued calls for improved road safety practices, adherence to traffic laws, and heightened public awareness.

Police investigations into all the crashes are ongoing.
