Two policemen are under investigation for their suspected involvement in three murders, including the shooting death of a popular St Mary businessman last week, multiple law-enforcement sources have revealed.

The other killing was a double murder, but sources declined to divulge details because the investigation is at a sensitive stage.

Among the persons being looked at is a cop who was allegedly apprehended in a car with two illegal guns and over 60 bullets along Port Henderson Road in Portmore, St Catherine, nearly 19 hours after businessman Garfield Singh was killed at his Boscobel home, sources disclosed.

It is unclear how the other policeman was apprehended. A civilian is also in custody for his suspected involvement in Singh’s death.

Superintendent Leighton Grey, commanding officer for the St Catherine South Police Division, which covers Port Henderson Road, confirmed that “some investigation is taking place”, but said he could not “shed any light on that”.

“I know that the investigation is being conducted at different places. I can’t give any light on the investigation in relation to St Mary,” he told The Gleaner when contacted yesterday before directing enquiries to the St Mary police.

Superintendent Anthony Wallace, commanding officer for the St Mary Police Division, confirmed, too, that an “active investigation” was under way but declined further comment.

WORKING TO SOLVE MURDERS

“The St Mary Criminal Investigation Branch is working overtime as we aim to, you know, solve this murder in the quickest possible time,” he said.

The initial police report about Singh’s death indicated that about 4 a.m. on February 9, residents heard loud banging at his home, followed by gunshots.

Moments later, gunmen were reportedly seen fleeing the premises, the commanding officer for the St Mary Police disclosed at the time.

When the police arrived at the scene, Singh was found inside the house, suffering from gunshot wounds, and later died at hospital.

About 11:15 p.m. that same day, according to a police statement, a team of cops spotted a grey Toyota Probox motor car with two men aboard overtaking a line of traffic along Port Henderson Road and intercepted the vehicle.

A senior officer insisted that subordinates search the vehicle after one of the occupants identified himself as a policeman, according to sources.

The statement from the police said the occupants were questioned before the vehicle was searched and a Taurus pistol, a magazine, and 65 nine-millimetre rounds of ammunition were found.

During a second search of the car after it was taken to the Greater Portmore Police Station, along with the occupants, an M16 assault rifle was also seized, according to the statement.
