Interpreting the Constitution

Published:Wednesday | February 22, 2023 | 12:46 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The constitutional laws of Jamaica were drafted by politicians to suit politicians, most of whom, ironically, are lawyers themselves.

The fundamental difference between the Jamaican Constitution and a United States republic is one where, unlike Jamaica, the US Constitution was formed on the belief that the people have supremacy over those that they elect to serve/govern. In Jamaica, the opposite holds true.

Our understanding, therefore, of the Jamaican Constitution is based on our interpretation of what has been written and who has the final say.
