Involve communities to fight crime

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing to express my deep concern over the shooting incident in front of the Meadowbrook Preparatory School earlier this month. This incident has shaken the community and highlights the urgent need for effective measures to be implemented to control criminal activities in and around our schools and communities.

I grew up in Meadowbrook at our family home on Flemington Drive, which is a stone’s throw away from the church and school. This is where lifelong friendships were forged, talents developed, and memories made. We took pride in our community.

It is imperative that we take immediate action to protect our children and school staff from such heinous acts of violence. As a concerned citizen, I would like to suggest a few ideas that could be implemented to address this issue.

First, we need an increase in surveillance and security measures around our schools and communities to deter criminal activities. These can include the installation of security cameras, increased police patrols, and the communities coming together to engage services of private security guards. This would help to create a secure environment, reassuring the people that safety is a top priority.

Second, we need to address the root causes of criminal activities in our communities. This can be done through expanding community-led initiatives aimed at increasing youth engagement in sports, arts, recreation facilities, providing a safe environment for vocational training and educational support. This would help to reduce the likelihood of young people engaging in crime and provide them with alternative pathways to channel their energies in positive activities.

Recruit new law-enforcement personnel, constantly train them, and ensure that they are provided with the necessary equipment and resources needed to effectively do their jobs and safeguard our communities.

Child safe zones should be created, and there should be provision to implement strict penalties against the offenders who indulge in criminal activities within these safe zones.

Last, we must encourage community members to report any suspicious activities to the police. Also, we should encourage community policing, where police officers partner with community leaders to build trust and ensure that residents feel safe.

We owe it to our children and our communities to take effective measures to control criminal activities in and around our schools. All of us need to work together to create a safe and prosperous society for all.
