THE EDITOR, Madam:

The Government should be held responsible for failing to prevent unsanitary practices at Crab Circle. The Ministry of Health and Wellness should have had inspectors to check on the conditions there, how the vendors are going to do business, even before the location was open for business. They needed to ensure that the place is fitted properly with restrooms for both vendors and customers. Alice’s actions, in my opinion, have brought a bad name and tarnished the reputation of not only Crab Circle, but street food in general. I must congratulate the vendor who made the viral video for bringing the unsanitary conditions to public attention and also the swift action by the police to help in closing down the location.

The important question is how can an area like that operate without running water and bathrooms to relieve body waste and the washing of hands? I strongly agree that the location should be closed until there are proper measures put in place to have proper waste management and disposal, and proper running water. The vendor who was caught on the video should be ashamed for defecating right where she prepared food. I think a strong message also needs to be sent by the authorities.

This incident has shown that the health of citizens in this country is not being taken seriously by the health officials who are responsible for food safety.

Crab Circle was given a makeover recently, but how is it there were no restrooms or handwashing stations put in place?

I want to use this opportunity to now call on the prime minister to intervene to ensure officials who are responsible to ensure that places that sell food are following the rules, and that whatever happened in Crab Circle is not repeated anywhere else.
