Tremolesworth Cemetery in a state of disrepair
THE EDITOR, Madam:
As I reflect on the deplorable state of Jamaica’s public cemeteries, my thoughts are particularly drawn to the Tremolesworth Cemetery in St Mary, a site that embodies the broader issues plaguing these sacred grounds. The neglect, mismanagement, and disrespect evident in this cemetery are not just reflections of local administrative shortcomings, but also pose significant health and emotional risks to the community.
Under the Public Cemetery Management and Regulation Act, local municipal corporations are mandated to maintain these sites in good condition. However, the reality at Tremolesworth Cemetery and others in St Mary paints a different picture. The absence of stationed caretakers, as noted by Port Maria Mayor Fitzroy Wilson, means that these cemeteries are often left unattended, leading to overgrown vegetation, broken fencing, and an overall state of disrepair.
Personal experience has shown me the devastating impact of corruption within the system. Relatives of the deceased pay fees to the parish council to reserve specific burial spots, only to find these spots, even after having dialogue and receiving confirmation from the assigned caretaker, allocated to others who are willing to pay a higher price to self-appointed caretakers. This practice is not only corrupt, but also adds to the emotional distress of families who have lost loved ones.
The haphazard arrangement of graves and lack of proper infrastructure at Tremolesworth Cemetery have led to significant environmental and health hazards. Water running through the cemetery causes major damage to graves and poses a health risk to the surrounding community. Graves are often dug perilously close to roads, and the absence of perimeter walls allows loose soil to spill onto the road, creating unsafe conditions.
In addition, the layout of the graves is disorganised, making it difficult for visitors to navigate the burial ground. This disorganisation shows a clear disregard for the dignity of the deceased and highlights the need for better planning and management.
The future of Tremolesworth Cemetery is not just about maintaining a plot of land; it is about honouring the lives of those who have shaped our community. Let us not forget the importance of Tremolesworth Cemetery and the souls that rest there. We must ensure that the memories of those who have come before us are respected and their resting places maintained with the dignity they deserve.
