Underdevelopment is crippling communities like Porus
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Communities like Porus have huge potential for sustained economic growth. However, there has been a big drop in social and economic activities, and this has taken a toll on what was once a lively community. Things are falling apart, and people are really on edge not knowing what’s going to happen next. Many believe the community has become a ghost town, but there are no ghosts there, just concerned citizens.
It’s clear that Porus needs a solid plan to support its development, and it’s way more than just Band-Aid solutions that create new problems. The lack of regular police presence and random crews hanging around are making it tough for local businesses. Crime and violence are old issues in Jamaica, and Porus is no exception. The community needs real development and a strategy that looks out for the people. Residents need to feel valued and know that their voices matter.
It’s no secret that the area’s economy has taken a big hit since the highway went up. Yet no one has stepped up to bring in new businesses. There’s a ton of potential to boost economic activity. Revamping the old railway station and community centre could be a great start. Plus, setting up a call centre could help since there are plenty of locals ready to jump in.
While the church leaders and local politicians mean well, just holding a few meetings and church services isn’t enough to tackle the real issues. Here’s a short list of what the community could benefit from:
1. More jobs to get the economy moving;
2. A proper dumping site so people don’t have to leave trash bags out for days;
3. A drought-management plan to make sure everyone has access to water;
4. Support for farmers and cattle rearers;
5. A proper market, including a slaughterhouse for butchers;
6. Maybe even a new fast-food place like the one in Spalding.
Porus has always been a community that stands on its own, but with the right support and programmes, it could shine for investors and businesses. No one knows the true value of this place but its residents. Porus is more than just a narrow road from Clarendon Park to Williams Field. It’s a lovely spot for many professionals in fields like education, law enforcement, health, merchandising, and entertainment. Communities like Porus play an essential role in development. Still, proper planning is key to unlocking its full potential.
