Messi’s visit, a missed opportunity?

Lionel Messi’s visit to Jamaica, was a significant moment. When a global sports icon visits any country, let alone a small island, young aspiring athletes receive invaluable motivation. Meeting a role model in person reinforces the belief that hard work and dedication can lead to success on the world stage.

Messi’s visit highlights the opportunities such an event can bring. Beyond the excitement and inspiration it generates, the presence of an internationally renowned athlete can have far-reaching benefits for our local sports scene, economy, and national image.

Truthfully, while Jamaica was revelling in the aura of Messi, I am sure that I was not the only one who was focused on the potential opportunities (both realised and missed) to collaborate with global sporting bodies. Increased tourism, media coverage, and sponsorship deals can boost local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to sporting goods stores. The visibility gained through international media exposure enhances the country’s reputation as a destination for future events, investments, and talent development. However, the missed opportunities outweigh the realised ones.

It is all well and good that Messi came to Jamaica, but what long-term benefits have been created? Did we explore the possibility of workshops, charity events, or exhibition matches? Working alongside a global star can lead to knowledge-sharing, improved infrastructure, and long-term partnerships that benefit the sporting ecosystem.

Here’s what could have been a possible solution.

- The Ministry of Tourism, in conjunction with the Ministry of Sport, could collaborate with the management team of Inter Miami to discuss the possibility of a partnership.

- A reputable hotel chain agree to accommodate the Inter Miami team in the offseason, for a month. This allows the brand Jamaica to be appreciated much more

- During the month-long stay, two 10-day camps could be organised. One in Kingston and the other in Montego Bay.

- The other free days over both periods would be for the Inter Miami contingent to enjoy Jamaica.

While Inter Miami may not be the greatest club, it is certainly an experience that will be welcomed, as the foundation of the club is strong, and the collective experience is unmatched.

Jamaica has the potential to elevate its level of football beyond the now. We should try to make the most of opportunities in the lifetime of the opportunities. Lionel Messi came to Jamaica; the hype was there. It’s an experience that may never happen again.

The questions are, did we make the most of him while he was here? Did we make the most of him or was it a missed opportunity?
