A loud cry to the police – excessive bike noise
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I write to formally lodge a complaint to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF’s) Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) regarding the increasing incidence of excessive noise caused by motorcycles in the Roehampton community, particularly along Roehampton Drive and Close, which has become a persistent source of disturbance and concern for the residents.
Saturday night, May 24 between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. was nothing short of torture, mere agony. There were about 12 motorcyclists who drove repeatedly (in a convoy) up and down Roehampton Drive and Roehampton Close, operating the loudest possible motorcycles that anyone could imagine.
It has been observed that a number of individuals routinely operate motorcycles fitted with modified or defective exhaust systems, generating noise levels well above any permissible limits. These disturbances are particularly acute during late evening and very early morning hours, undermining the peace and well-being of the community. In many cases, the riders are also seen operating their vehicles recklessly and at high speeds through these residential streets, without the required safety gear.
This situation has created a serious public nuisance, especially affecting the elderly, children, and individuals with health conditions. Moreover, the continued breach of noise regulations represents a disregard for the law and a potential threat to public safety.
In light of the above, I respectfully request the intervention of the police to address this matter and am very confident that this commissioner of police will take the necessary steps to restore order and some level of tranquillity in our neighbourhood. The residents of Roehampton would be grateful for any prompt and decisive action taken in this regard.
PERCY JOHNSON
