Support eco-friendly tourism developments

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I write in response to an article written by Janet Silvera in The Gleaner of June 2 titled ‘Building a legacy in paradise: Jamaica-born architect Gordon Gill designs Caribbean’s most ecologically advanced resort’.

The unveiling of plans for what is being described as the Caribbean’s most ecologically advanced resort in Westmoreland is not only inspiring — it marks a pivotal shift in the right direction for Jamaican tourism.

I want to publicly express my support for this initiative led by Gill.

Jamaica’s tourism strategy must evolve to reflect both sustainability and inclusiveness. This development offers a significant opportunity to diversify away from an overdependence on the all-inclusive model. Doing so enables greater economic linkages, deeper community engagement, and broader participation by Jamaicans across the tourism value chain.

Equally important is the role of thoughtful zoning and land use planning to ensure such innovative projects are not only developed in a way that preserves our natural assets while creating long-term national value but is also surrounded by like projects with nurtured, shared ecosystems.

The recent adjustment in the US travel advisory is timely, as it opens the door for us to attract even more visitors to experiences that are immersive, unobtrusive, and rooted in environmental and cultural authenticity. Projects like this one position Jamaica as it is a forward-thinking destination with unique offerings that deepen connection and will elevate perception.

As more people engage with the real Jamaica, our people, stories, and landscapes, the perceived value of our beloved destination rises. Those connections translate into higher spend, stronger loyalty, and a greater desire to return.

Let us continue to support developments that embrace innovation, protect our environment, and, most importantly, create opportunities for Jamaicans to thrive within our own tourism industry.
