Support students during transition period

THE EDITOR, Madam:

As the school year draws to a close, many students are preparing for the well-deserved summer break. However, before they can fully enjoy this time off, they face several significant challenges that require our attention and support. This period marks a critical transition for numerous students and is often one of the busiest times in the academic calendar.

Many students are currently awaiting the results of their CSEC and CAPE examinations, which can lead to considerable anxiety and stress, particularly if they are uncertain about their next steps. Schools and parents need to provide the necessary guidance during this transition period. Graduation celebrations should not just focus on the ceremony itself but also on the careful planning needed to secure students’ futures, including exploring higher education and vocational opportunities.

Parents and school administrators should prioritise securing scholarships and grants for students, enabling them to take advantage of the various opportunities available as they prepare for tertiary education. Higher learning is crucial, and we must encourage our students to equip themselves with the skills needed to thrive in the future.

Additionally, we should not overlook the PEP awardees, who have dedicated significant time and effort since grade 4 to prepare for this examination. These students will soon be transitioning to high school, a process filled with emotions and uncertainties for both them and their parents. Support during this transition is vital to help students manage their emotions and adapt to the new environment. Comprehensive orientation sessions are necessary to familiarise them with the school culture and expectations.

As we approach the end of the school year, it’s important to recognise that this time is not solely about vacation but is also a critical period of transition for many students. By putting support systems in place, we can help them navigate these changes effectively, ensuring they are better prepared for the challenges that lie ahead when the new academic year begins.
