Why are the school buses being used on campaign trail?
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I write to express my deep concern and to seek clarification regarding reports and images circulating on social media showing Jamaica Labour Party campaign events featuring recently acquired school buses that were ostensibly purchased for the nation’s students under the Ministry of Transport’s school bus programme.
It is troubling to witness assets meant to serve our children — many of whom still face difficulties with access to safe and reliable transportation — being used as props or transport on political platforms. These buses were financed with public funds and should be used strictly for educational purposes, not political campaigning. Their use in this manner raises serious questions about transparency, accountability, and the separation between state resources and party politics.
Was the Ministry of Education or any other government agency formally involved in approving the use of these buses for campaign purposes? If so, on what legal or policy basis was this permission granted? If not, who authorised their use?
The public deserves answers. More importantly, our children deserve better stewardship of resources dedicated to their welfare. We must avoid any blurring of the lines between public service and partisan advantage.
I hope the relevant authorities and The Gleaner will investigate this matter and provide clarity to the public.
