Commendable job by the JCF
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing with reference to The Gleaner story, ‘Secret Raid’, which reported that in a special operation on Tuesday morning a police constable believed to be involved in gun-trafficking was nabbed.
This is great work done by the police team. The illegal weapons seized by the police team is commendable and demonstrate the professional investigative work. The superintendent in command of the St. Andrew North Division has taken a zero tolerance approach towards illegal guns and criminality and has publicly stated his team will continue to be extremely vigilant within the various communities which encompasses the Division.
Every individual involved in the illegal gun trade must be thoroughly investigated, arrested and placed before the courts for this serious offence. No one is above the law, not even police officers, hence the arrest of this police constable who will undoubtedly face the court.
The JCF along with the Customs Agency of Jamaica deserve commendations because since the start of the year close to 200 illegal firearms have been found and seized. The majority of murders taking place in Jamaica are being carried out with illegal firearms.
However, what is commendable is that the police are working via various intelligence methods to find and seize the illegal guns and illegal ammunition and they are becoming more and more successful in this regard.
The Crime Stop portal and JCF’s National Intelligence Bureau tiplines are some of the channels which citizens can use to report high-value criminal information and where illegal guns and drugs are located and hidden. Jamaicans should utilise these initiatives provided to citizens to report crime. The JCF and Commissioner Blake need the widespread support of the Jamaican people.
