Puerto Seco Beach management must take responsibility
THE EDITOR, Madam:
The massive party held on the Puerto Seco Beach in Discovery Bay on Sunday, August 3 has drawn the ire of thousands of residents and passers-by who were trapped in their homes and on the streets by the traffic snarls that stretched from Discovery Bay into Trelawny and across the eastern section of St Ann.
Motorists heading home or to the airport, to church, seeking medical attention, or needing to make important family and holiday connections, were stranded for hours.
Much has been said about the traffic disruption but the public should also be told of the deafening, horrendous noise from the so-called dance music turned up to insufferable levels, and the vulgar, indecent language by the deejays, which invaded our homes.
To the best of my knowledge, the beach should be closed at 6 p.m., yet the party-keepers kept the noise going until the police eventually locked them down.
Puerto Seco cannot be one of those touted entertainment centres, as it is in the centre of a town and is surrounded by homes. I had holiday visitors and we had to stay locked up inside the house with all windows tightly closed for the entire ordeal.
The beach management must take responsibility for the mayhem, as the beach, once operated with much public goodwill and respect by the bauxite company, cannot continue to disrupt our weekends and holidays with such impunity. Whoever grants permission for these parties is asked to cease and desist. It must be against the law, and it must be against the beach control lifeguard hours regulations and capacities.
Same goes for those vehicle drivers who remove their noise abatement devices in defiance of the law as they drive around and torment especially the aged and infirmed, creating hearing loss and damaging houses and business structures.
Sunday, August 3 was a day of horror and shame. Let it never happen again!
