ISLAND WEDDING | Clifton and Nicole make love match at Sabina Park
When Nicole Douglas and Clifton Dyer took their seats in the stands at Sabina Park, both expected nothing more than an enjoyable game of cricket. But as the runs mounted and wickets fell, so too did their conversation deepen. Soon enough, that match blossomed into love, which later took them up the aisle to holy matrimony.
“We were sitting next to each other at the cricket match,” Nicole told Island Wedding. The two had attended with their friends and managed to strike up a discussion surrounding the game. Clifton said he was intrigued from the very start and eager to find out more about the beauty seated beside him.
“At first glance, there was an overwhelming feeling in my heart. I said it to my friends, and they encouraged me to make a move. So I started a conversation, and when we were leaving, we exchanged numbers,” he revealed.
Nicole could see herself dating a man like Clifton, hence the exchange of telephone numbers. She was pleased to discover, over time, how caring he was. “He is the kindest and most supportive person I know, and he goes all out for his family and loved ones. He is also hard working, honest, and reliable,” she said, adding, “I have no regrets giving him my number.”
Taking a stroll down memory lane, she recalled their first date that put their connection into perspective. “Our first date was at Devon House to get ice cream. It was a good date. We sat and talked, and he did everything to impress me.”
After being friends for a couple of months, the two developed strong feelings for each other, and Clifton made the bold move once again to pursue things even further. As her biggest supporter and cheerleader, he encourages her in just about everything she does. “Even when I tell myself that I can’t, he has all the confidence for me and instils that confidence within me.”
For Clifton, call it a sixth sense, but he always knew that Nicole was amazing, and as life progressed, she proved to be an absolute gem in his eyes. “Growing from a friendship into a relationship was the best thing that could ever happen. It gave us time to really get to know each other on a deeper level.”
Noting her incredible kindness, he shared that Nicole is also smart, honest, dependable, and a romantic. “She’s the type of woman any man would want in his life. She supports you in everything and always encourages me to do my best.”
As nature lovers, the couple enjoys going to the beach. They are also big fans of attending different sporting events, like the one where they found each other.
After seriously dating for 15 years, seven of which were spent living together, Clifton stepped up to the pitch, with hopes that he would hit a six with his proposal.
To help him pop the question, he asked her sister and best friends to plan a surprise get-together at Nicole’s best friend’s place of business. “On the day, I went to the business place after work, and Nicole’s sister went to pick up both her and the children. When she arrived, she was surprised to see me because I didn’t tell her I was stopping by,” he recounted.
The group celebrated the decoy occasion with food and drinks until it was time to take Nicole to the specially prepared area. “When she entered the area, I was on one knee with the ring in my hand. She was so surprised and started crying, saying that everyone had set her up. Other friends, family, and coworkers who were present began cheering and celebrating as she said ‘Yes,’” he recounted.
Following the successful proposal, the engaged couple opted for the bride-to-be to plan the wedding with the assistance of family members and friends. As for the dress, she said yes to a gown from Unions Bridal Boutique. “I had the style in mind based on viewing their pages, so I knew what I was looking for.”
Clifton and Nicole tied the knot on March 21 at Salem Gospel Hall in May Pen, Clarendon. The bride shared that her wedding was more than she could ever hope for. “It was my dream wedding,” she reflected, adding that the best moment for her came while walking up the aisle, seeing the smiles of her loved ones and the love in her husband’s eyes.
The suave groom shared similar sentiments, stating that the wedding was delightful from start to finish. Nothing could beat laying his eyes on his gorgeous bride for the first time as she walked towards him and later became his wife.
During the reception, held at Clarendon Paradise Garden in Toll Gate in the parish, the newlyweds shared their first official dance to For You by Kenny Lattimore. Still lost for words, Nicole described the moment as otherworldly. “The feeling is hard to describe because it just felt magical,” she said.
