Pan-Jamaican Investment Trust’s Chief Operating Officer Paul Hanworth and Group Vice-President of Human Resources and Information Technology, Karen Vaz volunteered along International Coastal Clean-up Day on the Palisadoes Strip in Kingston last Saturday. Team members from Pan-Jam helped to clear the coastlines of debris in an all-island exercise spearheaded by Jamaica Environment Trust.

Team Members from Island Routes Caribbean Adventures show the bags bearing garbage collected from a section of the Dump-Up Beach site in Montego Bay on International Coastal Clean-up Day 2015. The clean-up, which was coordinated by the Sandals Foundation in partnership with the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust. Some 140 bags of discarded items and 6,000 pounds of garbage were retrieved from six clean-up sites in Montego Bay.

Each year in September, thousands of volunteers comb lakes, rivers, and beaches around the world for litter. These volunteers are the driving force behind International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day. Last year, 561,000 volunteers picked up more than 16 million pounds of trash from the coastlines and waterways around the world.

More than 7,000 of those volunteers were Jamaicans who removed more than 85,000 pounds of trash from our beaches. They collected data about sources and types of trash harming our oceans and waterways. The data is used to raise awareness, inspire recycling efforts and shape policy decisions from the local to international level.

Among those joining the effort this year were Pan-Jam, Island Routes Caribbean Adventures, ScotiaBank and Sandals Negril.
