Brown-Burke says Jamaica must leave Privy Council before country is kicked out

In her contribution to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) debate, government senator, Dr Angela Brown-Burke, argued to the CCJ debate this morning that a regional final court is more suitable than the UK based Privy Council.

She argues that Jamaica must make the decision to leave the Privy Council before the country is kicked from the court set up to serve British colonies after the end of slavery in the 1800s.

Senator Brown Burke is also dismissing the Privy Council’s willingness to hear cases in Jamaica at the invitation and expense of the government.

She says the CCJ is an acceptable alternative to the Privy Council which meets the appropriate standards of a final court of appeal.
