One woman killed in five-vehicle crash on Mandela highway; westbound lane closed

The westbound lane of the Mandela Highway, in the vicinity of the Plantation Heights entrance, has been closed to vehicular traffic as a result of a fatal crash this afternoon.

One woman was killed and several others injured in the crash which involved five vehicles, including a hearse and a garbage compactor.

The incident occurred about 2:00 p.m. and reportedly involved vehicles travelling in a funeral procession along the highway. It's not clear what caused the crash at this time.

The identity of the dead woman is not yet known.

In the meantime, the police are urging motorists to use alternative routes and to exercise caution while traversing the roadways.
