Truck shortage causing garbage pile-up in St Elizabeth
Melville Harris, Gleaner Writer
Residents of several St Elizabeth communities entered the Independence holiday with a pile-up of domestic garbage.
It's the result of the shortage of garbage trucks in parish.
People in the communities of Siloah, Aberdeen, Thornton, Brae's River, Haughton, Newton, and Maggotty are among those affected.
Their garbage was last collected in the first week of July and now, the residents have the added worry of an increase in rodents in the commercial centres.
In the meantime, residents have started to burn their waste.
The Southern Parks and Market, which has the responsibility for garbage collection in the parish, says every effort will be made to have the backlog cleared in the shortest possible time.
At the same time, it is encouraging residents to ensure that their waste is properly packaged and stored away from stray animals.
