Property tax crackdown planned for St Catherine
A collection drive targeting persons in St Catherine with outstanding property tax is set to start on Monday.
Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) says during the exercise delinquent property owners will be served with final notices and summonses as well as warrants of disobedience ordered by the court.
TAJ says its activities will focus on the "most delinquent communities" in Spanish Town, Old Harbour and Linstead.
Among the areas to be targeted are Sydenham Villa, Willowdene, Villa Nova, Union Estate, New Harbour Village, Claremont Heights and Mickleton Meadows.
“The tax authority is encouraging persons to pay their outstanding property taxes in order to avoid enforcement actions being taken against them,” TAJ said in a statement.
It urged delinquent property owners to contact their local tax office or the Ministry of Local Government’s Property Tax Unit.
TAJ says the collection drive, which is scheduled to run until February 22, forms part of a number of initiatives aimed at improving Property Tax collections throughout the island.
It says a similar exercise was conducted by the Montego Bay Revenue Service Centre last December and yielded approximately $28 million or 84 per cent of the arrears that were targeted.
