NDM urges gov't to craft new ID law with wide input
The National Democratic Movement (NDM) has called on the government to go back to the drawing board and craft a new national identification system.
The call comes in the wake of yesterday’s ruling by the Constitutional Court that the National Identification and Registration Act should be struck from the books.
The National Identification System was to be created through the legislation.
NDM President Peter Townsend said in a statement that his party welcomes the court ruling.
Townsend says the government now needs to take a multi-partisan approach, involving all major stakeholders, to craft a national identification system that is constitutional and effective in meeting the country’s needs “at this critical time and going forward into the future.”
