Energy Ministry monitoring JPS, workers impasse
The Energy Ministry is encouraging dialogue between the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), employees and the workers’ union to get to a speedy settlement in the best interest of all stakeholders.
JPS has reported that it has activated its contingency plans in order to minimise disruption in service to customers in the event of any escalation in industrial action by employees.
JPS says this follows a breakdown in talks at the Ministry of Labour yesterday between the company & representatives of the Union of Clerical Administrative & Supervisory Employees (UCASE).
The parties have been at odds over wages and benefits.
Sections of the Corporate Area and St Thomas have been hit by outages.
JPS says it is investigating the cause of the outages.
At the same time, the JPS says it is making every effort to restore power supply to customers in sections of Kingston, St Andrew and St Thomas who are currently affected by outages.
The ministry underscores that electricity is an essential service and as such it is closely monitoring the situation.
