Ready Set Great
Curtains come up on 2024 youth summit
YOUTH CONTRIBUTING to and championing a healthy natural environment is among the areas about which delegates will brainstorm at the upcoming ‘Ready Set Great’ Conference, hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kingston.
Registration for the conference opened on August 12, International Youth Day, and is set to take place on October 17, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
According to information out of the UNDP, tickets to the conference are currently available at www.readysetgreatja.com.
“We are confident that our partnership with youth and other institutions will bring significant dynamism, creativity and insight to the greatest challenges facing young people,” noted Kishan Khodav, UNDP resident representative, in an August 12 press release to the media.
“UNDP remains committed to these partnerships with a view to bolstering the social resilience and inclusion of our young people,” he added.
Ready Set Great is staged annually, providing a solutions space where youth get the chance to consider prevailing problems and to work through possible responses.
It is against this background that, in addition to looking at enabling and sustaining the health of the natural environment, there are to be breakout sessions on ‘Youth living in a society that is safe, cohesive and just’; ‘Youth accessing benefits of a prosperous economy’; and ‘Youth empowered to achieve their full potential’.
The conference also offers the chance for participants to access a series of master classes, including, this year, ‘Investment 101: Stock Market, Bonds and other Investments’; ‘Outsmarting fraudsters and scammers’; ‘Digital Marketing in the age of Artificial Intelligence’; and ‘Green Jobs for the Future’ – all intended to help young people answer the 2023 call to action for poverty eradication.
The conference sees the collaboration of key stakeholders working in the youth advocacy arena, including Jhannel Tomlinson of the Caribbean Youth Climate Justice Coalition; Anni-vee Moore of Young Women/Men of Purpose; Nevile Charlton of Youth Inspiring Positive Change JA Ltd; Jénine Shepherd of Youths for Excellence Ltd; and Shamar Wedderburn of Equipped To Speak; among others.
They are joined by representatives from organisations including the Planning Institute of Jamaica and the Vision 2030 Jamaica Secretariat, the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Research, as well as the Jamaica Social Investment Fund.
