The tourism industry in Jamaica is a mecca for growth, with a competitive edge that makes destination Jamaica a formidable force, both locally and internationally.

For over 25 years, the name Marlene Buckridge has been synonymous with the continued growth and development in the industry, which is no different with her current role as Director of Sales and Marketing at the ROK Hotel.

Buckridge is an accomplished hospitality professional with over a decade of experience in luxury resort management and operations. Her career has spanned some of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands, including Ritz-Carlton, Westin, Luxury Collection, Hilton Hotels, AC Hotels, and Courtyard by Marriott.

With a proven track record in opening and revitalising luxury properties, she has built a reputation as a leader in destination services, sales, revenue management, events, and marketing.

“I started in the industry as an administrative assistant at the Ritz-Carlton,” Buckridge said.

“While there I worked hard and received several promotions. I refer to the Ritz-Carlton as my qualification and transition into the tourism industry. There, standard, professionalism and client care transcended the norm, and the information and knowledge that I garnered I have carried with me through every interaction since then.”

Buckridge has been instrumental in the opening of three major hotels in Kingston – the Courtyard Marriott, AC Hotel, and the ROK Hotel – serving them in the capacity of Director of Sales and Marketing.

At the ROK Hotel, within the first six months of its opening, her team brought in an unprecedented US$1.5 million in business.

“The opening of a hotel is not an easy feat. However, I am by nature a hard worker, and I maintain high standards, delivering on the promises that I make. I build my team from the ground up and I love to see them flourish,” Buckridge said.

Her career highlights include the successful launch of several five-star luxury resorts, where she played a pivotal role in developing innovative dining concepts, menu engineering, and executing high-profile events. Her expertise extends from conceptual planning to seamless execution, ensuring exceptional guest experiences and operational excellence.

“It is important in our field that we understand niche marketing. We have to understand who is travelling, and what we are offering them to stay with us,” Buckridge explained.

“People who have a passion for sales know that it is not just about selling a product, but also selling yourself. You, as the individual brand, must connect and relate to you, the most accessible part.”

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Buckridge’s work has taken her across the globe, contributing to her diverse perspective on hospitality. She has worked in several Caribbean nations, including St Thomas and Grand Cayman, and in Europe in countries such as Ireland and Scotland, bringing cultural insight and adaptability to every project.

This international experience has honed her ability to tailor luxury offerings to diverse clientele while upholding the highest standards of service.

“My days are diverse as I have direct oversight for the team, making sure deliverables are met. It is important that all our goals align. We are known as the representatives of the hotel and even if we are not at work, they have the confidence in us that if they need something done, we are going to make it happen for them,” she said.

A creative at heart, her blend of strategic vision, operational expertise, and cross-cultural experience makes Buckridge a dynamic force in the world of luxury hospitality.

“Our service has never wavered. People like to see growth, and all my experiences over the years, has assisted me to create an authentic brand, and deliver what most travellers are looking for,” Buckridge said.

Beyond her professional endeavours, Buckridge enjoys live music, cooking, hiking, painting, and exploring rivers – interests that fuel her inspiration and creativity in her work.
