White River, St Mary:

Chukka Caribbean Adventures’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Marc Melville said his company has emerged stronger and uniquely poised thanks to strategic decisions made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking with The Gleaner from the Chukka White River Valley attraction in St Mary, on Sunday, Melville highlighted the sacrifices made during the heights of the pandemic that have now begun to yield rich dividends.

He said that while some companies opted for widespread layoffs and a conservative approach to investments, Chukka took a different path. Melville said the company made the conscious decision to retain and rotate staff members, committing to their workforce even in the face of uncertainty.

“We knew that our employees were our most valuable asset,” commented Melville.

“Instead of letting go of our talented team, we chose to invest in them and the future of our company. We believed that the tourism sector would rebound, and we wanted to be ready for it. This forward-thinking approach has positioned Chukka to capitalise on the expected growth in cruise tourism, and as larger ships begin to dock at Jamaican and Caribbean ports and visitor numbers rise, the company is not playing catch-up, “he added.

Melville emphasised that Chukka is moving proactively, adapting to the evolving landscape of tourism across its six Caribbean destinations.

“The Caribbean and Jamaica are on the verge of something special. We’re seeing an influx of larger ships and more visitors. Growth is on the horizon, and we want to be at the forefront of this renaissance. ”Melville further remarked.

The CEO said that Chukka’s commitment to quality and unique experiences has always set it apart from competitors, adding that with the return of cruise tourism, the company is poised to showcase its diverse offerings, from thrilling zip-lining adventures to serene river tubing experiences. These attractions, he said, not only cater to the adventurous spirit of cruise passengers but also enhance the overall visitor experience in Jamaica.

REMARKABLE RESILIENCE

Melville’s confidence in the industry’s recovery is grounded in the data and trends emerging from the current tourism landscape. He said that the resilience shown by the Caribbean tourism sector has been nothing short of remarkable, and companies that made strategic choices during the pandemic are now reaping the rewards.

“The industry is rebounding faster than many anticipated. We’re seeing a strong demand for travel, and Jamaica is a prime destination for cruise lines. The return of cruise tourism to a position of strength will not just be beneficial for Chukka; it will have a ripple effect throughout the local economy. Increased passenger traffic leads to heightened demand for local services, crafts, and culinary experiences, ”Melville further said.

He noted that Chukka is committed to promoting sustainable tourism practices that benefit the community and preserve the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

“As Chukka continues to expand its offerings and enhance its attractions, the company remains focused on innovation. We’re not just waiting for visitors to come, we’re creating experiences that they will remember for a lifetime. Our goal is to ensure that every guest leaves with a story to tell and a desire to return, “he explained.

Founded in 1983, Chukka Caribbean Adventures is the region’s leading nature-adventure company, offering over 122 tours across six countries including Jamaica, Barbados, Turks & Caicos, St Thomas (US Virgin Islands) Dominican Republic, and Belize. Known for thrilling activities, cultural experiences, and eco-friendly practices, Chukka emphasizes sustainability, guest satisfaction, and community engagement, redefining adventure tourism in the Caribbean.

Marc Melville was conferred with the Order of Distinction in 2022 for his contributions over the years to tourism.
