Portmore man charged in Canadian employment scam granted $600,000 bail
A 59-year-old Portmore, St Catherine man who is charged for defrauding persons in a Canadian employment scam was granted $600,000 bail in the parish court on Friday.
Harvey Dawkins, of Mount Royal Estate, is answering four counts of obtaining money by false pretence, breaches of the Consumer Protection Act, and operating an agency without a license.
In applying for bail, his attorney, Earl Hamilton, told the judge that Dawkins is willing to make restitution but needs bail to secure the necessary funds.
In granting bail, the judge ordered Dawkins to report to the Portmore police three times a week and to surrender his travel documents.
He is scheduled to return to court on March 21.
Allegations are that Dawkins convinced the complainants that he had connections to a Canadian employment programme.
He allegedly collected money from the complainants, who are based in St Catherine.
The police were alerted after the promised travel arrangements were not made and the complainants did not receive refunds.
Dawkins was subsequently arrested and charged with fraud.
