WINDALCO invests $10m for dredging at Portland Cottage Fishing Village

UC Rusal Alumina Jamaica Ltd/WINDALCO has invested $10 million to carry out dredging works at the flood-prone Portland Cottage Fishing Village in Clarendon as part of Hurricane Beryl recovery efforts.

Sections of Portland Cottage were significantly damaged during the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 3, 2024.

WINDALCO’s commitment to the Portland Cottage Fishing Village is part of broader recovery efforts coordinated by the Government of Jamaica through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining.

According to a release from the company, WINDALCO has paid the full cost for hiring a professional heavy equipment contractor to clear debris from multiple sites, with focus on the fishing beaches and other critical areas impacted by the hurricane.

Country Manager and Mining Director Sergey Kostyuk emphasised WINDALCO’s commitment to community development and environmental restoration. He says the company’s role in this major clean-up project also contributes to the preservation of public health and the restoration of environments impacted by flooding due to natural disasters.

“WINDALCO believes firmly in community development and environmental remediation. This project will not only restore the access channel at the fishing village that was impacted by Hurricane Beryl, but will also help to maintain the ecological integrity of the waterways and coast. Ultimately, this ensures the sustainability of jobs for fisherfolk in Portland Cottage and enhances their livelihood economically and recreationally.”

Member of Parliament for South East Clarendon, Pearnel Charles Jr, thanked WINDALCO for its investment, noting that such partnerships are essential to community development. “This initiative aims to widen the beach and reduce damage to essential parts like boat engines, ensuring a safer and more functional space for our fishers and visitors alike.”

Meanwhile, Vice President of the Barmouth Fishing Enterprise Nasheba Montieth says the community is grateful for the assistance provided by WINDALCO. “I would like to say thank you to WINDALCO as Barmouth Beach is the economic engine of Portland Cottage. It is our daily food basket and so we are more than grateful. This is more than enough for Portland Cottage residents.”
