JCC cautions Holness on minimum wage promise
The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) has reacted to Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness' promise to move the national minimum wage to $32,000 per 40-hour work week, cautioning him to "follow the established consultative process before committing the country to such an obligation".
At a mass rally on Sunday in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Holness, who is leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, said if the JLP retains the reins of government after Wednesday’s general election, the national minimum wage will move to $18,500 per 40-hour work week “in our first budget and then gradually after that for the next few years”.
In a statement on Monday the JCC said it acknowledges the importance of ensuring that all Jamaicans earn a liveable wage.
However, it said a consultative approach was critical, given the potential impact on worker expectations and the business community—particularly micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
It pointed out that the law already provides for a consultative process that involves the Government, private sector, trade unions, civil society, and academia, with careful consideration given to factors such as the cost of living, food prices, and overall economic conditions.
"We urge the Government to continue with this process so as not to risk creating significant disruption to businesses and the broader economy.
"Since any increase in the minimum wage can potentially result in increased unemployment or result in increased costs being passed on to consumers, decisions of this nature must be grounded in collaboration and transparency," the JCC stated.
In the meantime, the JCC is calling for both major political parties to ensure that any commitments within their manifestos or made on a political platform are
accompanied by clear, detailed explanations of how they will be funded and implemented.
