Power outages hit several parishes as cold front brings strong winds

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has reported power outages in several parishes as strong winds associated with the cold front impacting the island disrupt electricity supply. Affected areas include sections of Hanover, St. Ann, the Corporate Area, St. Catherine, and Clarendon.

“Our emergency response teams are already carrying out restoration where it is safe to do so,” JPS Chief Operating Officer Lance Becca said on Tuesday. “Crews were working late into Monday night to restore customers, and we have made significant headway.”

The utility company is urging members of the public to exercise caution, particularly around fallen or broken wires, and to report outages or hazards using the JPS mobile app, its social media pages @myjpsonline, or the Customer Care Centre at 888-CALL-JPS (888-225-5577 for Flow and 888-935-5577 for Digicel).

The outages come as Jamaica braces for more unsettled weather. A cold front has been affecting the country.

According to the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, a trough is moving across the western Caribbean and is expected to affect the island from late Tuesday night through Thursday, bringing periods of showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

Another cold front is forecast to impact the island on Friday, bringing cooler temperatures and strong winds, particularly across northern parishes.
