Update | St Elizabeth man charged over cocaine bust at Sangster airport
The St Elizabeth farmer who was being sought by the police in connection with the alleged seizure of more than 100 pounds of cocaine in a suitcase at the Sangster International Airport in St James has been arrested and charged.
Renaldo Brooks, who was named as a person of interest, has been charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, attempting to export cocaine, and conspiracy to export cocaine.
Accompanied by his attorney, Brooks surrendered to the police at the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) Area One office in Montego Bay, St James, on Monday, February 2. Following a question-and-answer interview, he was formally charged.
The police report that on Monday, January 26, anomalies were detected during an electronic examination of a suitcase at the airport that was destined for Canada.
A physical search of the luggage revealed several sachets containing more than 48 kilogrammes, or approximately 110 pounds, of cocaine, which police estimate has a street value of $30 million.
Brooks is scheduled to appear in the St James Parish Court on Friday, February 6 to answer to the charges.
