Man killed in alleged shoot-out with police in Thompson Pen, St Catherine
A man was fatally shot during an alleged shoot-out with police in Thompson Pen, St Catherine Thursday morning.
He has been identified as 37-year-old fisherman Demoy Campbell, a resident of the community.
According to police reports, a team was conducting an operation in the area about 7:30 a.m. in search of wanted men when they came under gunfire from a man.
The police say they returned fire, during which Campbell was shot.
He was taken to hospital, where he later died.
A firearm was recovered from the scene, the police reported.
According to the police, Campbell was a long-standing person of interest whom they had sought on numerous occasions.
However, residents have disputed the police’s account, claiming that Campbell was killed in cold blood.
The scene was later visited by investigators from the Independent Commission of Investigations , as well as the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Inspectorate, both of which have launched separate probes.
