Thirty-five community activists were officially installed as justices of the peace (JPs) in a beautiful ceremony, complemented by the sweet sounds of Rory Frankson and David Feare, at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on Thursday, September 8.

The members of the group, representing a wide cross section of professionals in the parish of St James, were conferred with their new titles by the president of the St James Lay Magistrates' Association, Claudette Bryan.

Bryan, who was representing Custos of St James Ewen Corrodus, reminded the group they were now part of a distinguished office dating back to the 13th century.

Lauding their enthusiasm, dedication and tenacity, Bryan said the new justices of the peace would certainly make a positive impact on the society.

Reminding the new JPs of the responsibilities of the role they have committed to, Bryan implored them to take their duties seriously and make their mark. "You must be of unquestionable character; you must be involved heavily in community work and plans for future involvement; you must make yourselves available to serve (including ongoing training); and you must maintain a good relationship with members of the public," she told the inductees.
