Typewriter to top 1600m Owen Silvera feature
Another in the now monthly sequence of Sunday meets is on at Caymanas Park today, the nine-race programme featuring the 3-y-o and up open allowance race over a mile for the Owen Silvera Memorial Cup.
It has attracted seven starters, including the 2013 Superstakes winner TYPEWRITER, who is coming off a recent win in the Nigel B. Nunes Memorial Trophy over 1820 metres when ridden by champion jockey Dane Nelson in the absence of regular pilot Shane Ellis.
Despite having to shoulder customary topweight of 57.0kg, TYPEWRITER, with Ellis back in the saddle, represents the class horse in the field and can make amends for his near miss in this very race last year when beaten a nose by COMMANDING CHIEF in a thrilling finish.
Although having declined a bit this season, the five-year-old son of Western Classic - Docs' Paladin is still good enough to stave off old rival EXOTIC GOLD, who was a close fourth last year.
Indeed, TYPEWRITER should be wary of the Wayne DaCosta-trained EXOTIC GOLD based on their last meeting in the Nigel B. Nunes Memorial Trophy over 1820 metres on August 31.
She finished a length second to TYPEWRITER, ensuring that the winner was extended in the closing stages.
Now slightly better off at the weights and working very well, EXOTIC GOLD under leading jockey Dick Cardenas will prove tough over the shorter distance of this race. But TYPEWRITER, having worked fairly well in preparation for this race, is coming to run.
Having beaten EXOTIC GOLD every time they have met, he should confirm his superiority over the 2012 Oaks winner as well as another old rival, TIMEFORARMS, who was third in the Nunes Memorial.
Elsewhere on the card, the DaCosta-trained DINNER AT SEVEN with Cardenas up, should make amends for her close second on her recent debut by winning the second race over the straight five course ahead of the well-forward newcomer PIZZARO, with Nelson astride, in a field of seven.
I also like GOLDEN BULLET (working well) to return with a bang in the third race, SACHIN to complete a hat-trick of wins in the fourth, YOUR EMINENCE to catch old rival RONIN in the fifth also over the straight, and BARS OF GOLD (Nelson up) to catch recent winner CRUCIAL in the closing race over 1200 metres for three-year-olds.
