Rousseau take early lead

Rousseau Primary are the leaders in the Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) National Primary Schools Athletics Championship after three finals were completed yesterday at the National Stadium.

The St Andrew-based Rousseau led with 18 points and they are closely followed by Friendship (16), Harbour View (12), defending champions Naggo Head (11) and the trio of Black River, Holy Family, and Portsmouth - all on nine points apiece.

 

FRIENDSHIP ON TOP

 

Friendship took the top two places in the girls' cricket throw open final. Brenda Sterling won the event with a throw of 48.46 metres with her teammate, Jilesa Simms (43.56m) in second and Rousseau's Demetra Campbell, third with 43.30.

Coach of Friendship Primary, Rajiv Chatrie, was pleased with the performances of his athletes.

"I feel very pleased. Both girls in the cricket ball throw are cricketers, so they have the talent," Chatrie told The Gleaner.

In the long jump open final Alicke Cranston of Black River Primary who broke the record with a new mark of 5.42m during the preliminary round on Wednesday's day one came back and pocketed gold with 5.01m. He won ahead of Povell Lawrence of Harbour View (4.99m) and Javon Anderson of Holy Family (4.89m).

In the girls' high jump open, Tashianne Creary of Portsmouth won the event with a best of 1.38m. Brittany Smith of Rousseau was second with 1.35m metres while Naggo Head's Tori-Ann Davis was second with 1.30m. The four-day track and field meet continues today, starting at 8 a.m.
