Portmore eye top spot in RSPL

Portmore United coach Shavar Thomas said it will be important to get a win against Waterhouse in their mid-week Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL, fixture today at the Spanish Town Prison Oval starting at 3.30 p.m. and move to the top of the points standings.

Portmore (28 points) trail Arnett by two points and can claim pole position in the league with a win this afternoon, and Thomas said it is 'important' to keep up the 'pressure' on their opponents.

"It is important to win because we want to put some pressure on the people above us and we want to separate ourselves from the ones chasing us.

"So if we can win this game and put pressure on Arnett Gardens that would be important because when we take care of business it puts pressure on them to come out and win their game ... But it is going to be a very difficult game," he reasoned.

A Portmore victory today would put them atop of the table by one point ahead of Arnett, who play tomorrow. However, Thomas' team will be up against an improving Waterhouse team and he is quite wary of his opponents' continued improvement under new coach Donovan Duckie and will not taking them lightly.

"When you look at their (Waterhouse) results in the last month, they have improved a lot. We are not expecting them to be the team we played in October ... we expect some form of improvement.

"They have a good coach at the helm but we are ready for the challenge. It's going to be a tough game and we expect the coach to prepare his team to come and give a good fight. But we are very confident in the work we have been doing and we are most definitely going for the three points," he stated.
