Commonwealth Games 2018 | Tough day for Atkinson

Jamaican swimmer Alia Atkinson finished outside the medals in the 50m butterfly final at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday after an eight place finish at the Optus Aquatic Centre.

Atkinson, the 50m breaststroke silver medal winner, clocked 27.35 seconds in the event, which was won by Australia's Cate Campbell in 25.59 seconds. 

The host nation in fact swept the podium spots as Holly Barratt was second in 25.67 seconds and Madeline Groves swam third in 25.69 seconds. 

Atkinson, actually swam less than 30 minutes earlier in the 100m breaststroke semi-final, where she finished seventh in 1:09.83, meaning that her campaign on the Gold Coast has come to an end. 

The Sunshine Girls continued their dominant start to netball competition with a strong 79-41 win over Northern Ireland at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre. Jhaniele Fowler-Reid was devastating, sinking 32 goals from 33 attempts, while Romelda Aiken helped herself to 26 from 28.  Shanice Beckford grabbed 11 from 11 and Rebekah Robinson, 10 from 11. 

Jamaica will next play Barbados at 3:32 a.m. on Monday. 

In women preliminary round basketball, Jamaica defeated Malaysia 81-58 at the Cairns Convention Centre with Jennifer George scoring 21 points to lead the Jamaican charge.
