Champions reign in Philly

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania:

Following victories earlier in the day by Edwin Allen and Holmwood, Hydel made it three out of three for defending champions, after closing the show yesterday in the final event for high school girls at the Penn Relays, by retaining their 4x400 metres title, after clocking 3:36.38.

In a strategic move, coach Corey Bennett, for the first time this season, had ace quarter-miler Shiann Salmon on anchor, and despite good competition from Holmwood and Bullis High out of Maryland, it was all over once Salmon got the baton in front, as she moved away from her rivals for a strong win, ending her high school career on a high.

"This win means a lot for me, as I just wanted to come out and do it for my school and family, as we all wanted this win and we got it and we are very thankful. Despite a competitive race from Holmwood, I was not worried, as I remembered why I was placed on the anchor leg and I had to take it home for my team, and this I did," said Salmon.

The other members of the winning team were Cherokee Young, Tafari Rose and Garriel Whyte.

Holmwood finished second in 3:38.14, with Bullis taking third in 3:41.51. St Elizabeth Technical 3:44.11 were fifth, while Edwin Allen, with Kevona Davis on the third leg ended seventh in 3:45.38, while Petersfield ran eighth in 3:52.12.

Earlier, Holmwood got things started for the Jamaicans, with Britanny Campbell, who put in an impressive 2:08.54 split, leading them to a 8:47.33 win. The other members of the team were Delverna Bromfield, Sasha Brown and Chrisanni May. Spaldings ended eighth in 8:15.33.

NO DENYING EDWIN

There was no denying Edwin Allen, as they retained their title in the Championships of America 4x100 metres event, clocking 44.79 seconds for the win, their fifth in a row and seventh overall.

Holmwood took second in 45.05 seconds, with Hydel closing out the top three in 45.38 seconds. St Jago were fifth in 46.07 seconds, St Catherine High sixth in 46.22, with Petersfield coming in eighth in 46.81 seconds.

Calabar's Kai Chang and St Jago's Lushane Wilson captured individual events on the day.

Chang surprised defending champion, Roje Stona of St Jago to take the boys' discus title with 64.79 metres. Stona was second with 63.39m, while Phillip Barnett of Excelsior (61.90m) and Daniel Cope of Petersfield (58.09m) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Wilson made it consecutive wins in the high jump, after a winning height of 2.16m.
