Time for Queenoftheharbour
Five-year-old mare TWILIGHT ERUPTION will give Sunrise-Six players a flying start in tomorrow's opening event, a 1400 metres race for five-year-olds and up non-winners of two.
The Byron Davis-trained mare is enjoying very good form. She followed up a third place to Colt of Arms in a 1300 metres event last December 12 with a fairly fast fourth-place finish in a 1000 metres straight on December 29. Her final time in that straight race was 1:01.1, which is fairly fast for horses at this level.
TWILIGHT ERUPTION has, in fact, beaten most of the rivals in tomorrow's race and with just 51kg on her back, courtesy of apprentice Tevin Foster's 3kg claim, the Twilight Time - Topanaris offspring should use her pace to pull clear of rivals from very early.
Race Two is a knotty event for maiden four-year-olds and up over 1500 metres. The Wayne DaCosta-trained PURE HEART has been marking time since his disqualification on November 3 after passing the post first. The four-year-old gelding did run an improved race on December 29 when placing second to KEY WITNESS over a 1300 metres trip but has been severely penalised for that run. Tomorrow, he will carry 57kg and is surely too heavy.
The selection is DARE TO SPEAK. He has been very inconsistent but comes in at 53kg and is weighted to get the better of PURE HEART. When the two met on December 29, PURE HEART carried 52kg while DARE TO SPEAK had 56kg. The latter has dropped 3kg while PURE HEART has gone up 5kg, a swing of 8kg. That should be enough to ensure a win for the Ryan Williams-trained DARE TO SPEAK.
The third race, a 1600 metres race for $600,000 claimers, should be a straight battle between SIR PUDDINGTON and JACKO LINKS. The latter has shown vast improvement in recent weeks and won over the distance on November 24 beating $850,000 claimers. Thus, he is down a level and is expected to run a great race.
SIR PUDDINGTON is, however, too light to be ignored. He was considered a Classic contender last year but ran a disappointing race in the Jamaica Derby. His form since has not been encouraging but has trained really well to meet tomorrow's engagement. Last Saturday, he breezed 1400 metres in 1:30.2 and should run his best race in many months.
QUEENOFTHEHARBOUR is another horse that has shown admirable improvement in recent weeks and is the firm selection for Race Four. She drops 3kg after a career-best effort over 1400m last time out and has the pace to go all the way in tomorrow's 1600 metres race.
Donovan Plummer's four-year-old filly has beaten most of her rivals in the recent past and will be tough to beat at 50kg. The promising apprentice Raddesh Roman has the ride.
The last two races should be won by MOVIESTAR (well-handicapped) and the very fast LAGUNA POINT.
