Burrowes takes early lead at Alliance National Golf Championships
Former champion Justin Burrowes signalled his intentions to fight for the National Amateur title this year, after taking a one-shot lead after day one of the Championships at the Caymanas Golf Course yesterday.
Burrowes, who was runner up to William Knibbs in the zero to six category last year, shot a one-over-par 73, while Knibbs is just one shot back following his two-over-par round of 74.
Owen Samuda is also in the mix after the opening round, as he lies in third place after a three-over-par round of 75. Mark Newnham and Zandre Roye are tied for fourth after four over par rounds of 76.
Burrowes, who had an eagle and three birdies to go with his six bogeys, said his opening round, despite the tough conditions, was a decent one, which he believes sets him up nicely for the remaining three days.
“Today was pretty good,” he said. “I knew that I had to post a good number to keep myself in the tournament which I felt like I did today. I didn’t putt as well as I wanted to but there is still a lot of positives to build on going into the next three days.”
Former Cricket West Indies President Dave Cameron has the early lead in the men’s seven to 12 category, after his opening round 87. Thajae Richards is a shot back after carding 88.
In the men’s seniors category, Vikram Dhiman has taken an early lead in the zero to twelve category, after his eight-over par round of 80. Tony Allison shot an 82 to be two shots off the lead.
Former Jamaica Golf Association President Wayne Chai Chong leads the pack in the men’s zero to 12 super seniors category, after a seven-over par 79 to lead Teddy Alexander by one shot.
Jodi Munn-Barrow has jumped out front in the ladies zero to 12 category, after her even-par 72. Samantha Azan shot a nine-over par 81 to lie in second place.
For Munn-Barrow, the error-free round was pleasing heading into the rest of the tournament.
“I am very happy with today’s round because I didn't make a lot of mistakes despite the course playing very tough as the conditions were hard,” she said yesterday. “Overall I am happy, but I still have two more days to go and I still have to focus and hopefully, the outcome will be good."
