Guyana Amazon Warriors’ Odean Smith (centre) and teammate Chandrapaul Hemraj (right) celebrate the dismissal of Jamaica Tallawahs’ Sharmarh Brooks during their Hero Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 cricket match at Warner Park Sporting Complex in Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis yesterday.

The Jamaica Tallawahs exited the Caribbean Premier League, going down by 14 runs to the Guyana Amazon Warriors in their must-win rain-affected final game of the campaign yesterday.

After a much-improved bowling performance that saw the Tallawahs restricting the Warriors to 142 for seven in the 18-overs-a-side affair, they could not back up that performance with the bat and were dismissed for 128 in17 overs and a ball.

The result means the Tallawahs finish in fifth place on eight points from their 10 matches.

After losing to the Warriors on Saturday, the Tallawahs’ only chance of making it into the final four was if they could beat the Warriors in their final preliminary-round match, however, that was not to be, despite the Tallawahs holding the upper hand in the early exchanges of Sunday’s contest.

Amazon Warriors, who decided to bat first after winning the toss, were in trouble due to spin bowling from Imad Wasim and Chris Green.

The duo snared five of the first seven wickets to fall, leaving the Amazon Warriors at 75 for seven in the 12th over.

However, Romario Shepherd took them to a respectable total, which proved to be just enough in the end.

Shepherd, who was hit on the helmet twice in the early part of his innings, blasted 72 from 31 balls with seven fours and six sixes to improve the Warriors’ score, which looked unable to get to 100 at one stage.

The right-hander showed his all-around ability with the bat in his man-of-the-match performance, striking at a rate of 232 to give some impetus to the Warriors innings. Chandrapaul Hemraj was the next best scorer with 21 as Wasim finished with three wickets for 15 runs, and there were two wickets for Green and Andre Russell.

The momentum from the Warriors’ innings carried over into their bowling as they had the Tallawahs in a tailspin early, at one stage reeling at 78 for eight.

No one in the Tallawahs line-up could replicate what Shepherd did for the Warriors, and Jamaica fell short despite a late flurry from Chris Green, who was the last man out for a top score of 31.

Shepherd sealed a fantastic all-around game with three wickets for 31 while Jamaican Odean Smith also picked up three wickets, with two wickets for Imran Tahir, who started off the debacle with the ball for the Warriors.

The loss was the sixth of the 2021 campaign for the Tallawahs.

“I think we got a good start with the ball as we talked about getting it right in the first five to six overs, and I think we did that and at the back end, we kind of strayed a little from our plans,” Tallawahs captain Rovman Powell said. “As far as the batting is concerned, our middle-order didn’t stand up, and if the middle-order does not do well, it’s always going to be difficult.”
