Nicholson crediting experience for strong start in Belgium
WITH A more consistent start to his third season in Belgium, national striker Shamar Nicholson says experience and staying the course in his development has helped him become a better contributor to his club team, RSC Charleroi.
Nicholson, 24, had a late start to his 2021/22 club campaign after international duty with the Reggae Boyz at this summer’s Gold Cup tournament.
However, after three games without a goal, Nicholson has hit his stride and has managed to become a consistent goalscoring threat. He scored four goals in back-to-back games in August, including a hat-trick against Beerschot on August 28.
Nicholson recently scored four in five league games, taking his tally to eight so far for the season, equalling his 2019/20 season tally. He is already just a goal away from matching last season’s effort (nine).
Nicholson attributes his stronger league start to being more seasoned in the Jupiler league.
“Everything is all about growth, hard work and a bit more focus. Personally, I was (comfortable) from the first season that I arrived but year by year I gained experience so it’s all experience,” Nicholson told The Gleaner.
“It’s not about if I am more settled inside in the team or whatever. It’s more about the experience, willing to learn and willing to do more.”
LONG DROUGHTS
Nicholson also enjoyed a wonderful October, scoring in every game in the month. The lanky striker is hoping this means the days of long droughts, the longest being 13 straight games during his first season, are behind him.
Nicholson is seventh in the golden-boot race this season, two goals off second place where there is a three-way tie and six goals adrift of leader Michael Frey of Antwerp. Charleroi are fifth with 23 points and within striking distance of the top four places, which guarantee a place in the championship play-offs.
With Nicholson approaching the prime of his career, he says he feels more determined this year to be a more consistent presence for his team to further his aspirations as well as those of his team. Charleroi were third in 2019.
“Every year you want to do better. Now I am reaching the peak of my career. At age 25, 26, these are the years where you reach the peak. This is what I have to take into consideration and work twice as hard and try to focus my mind more,” Nicholson said.
Nicholson and West Ham United frontman, Michail Antonio, are Jamaica’s leading goalscorers in the World Cup qualifying campaign with two goals each.
