‘Feels like home’
Reggae Girlz Spencer extends contract with Spurs until 2024
After a strong first-round World Cup qualifying campaign, national goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer ensured her club future was secured with Tottenham Hotspur.
Spencer, 31, signed a contract extension with the FA Women’s Super League (WSL) club on Wednesday, keeping her in North London until 2024. Spencer has been with the club since 2019 moving from West Ham United and had previously credited joining the Spurs as well as her debut international call-up last year in helping her rediscover her love for the game.
Spencer said that finalising her stay at Spurs was a priority after the last international window and did not take much convincing for her to continue her career at Tottenham.
“Obviously, I am delighted to have signed a new contract. It was something that was on my mind coming back from the last international break and having that conversation nice and early made it really easy for me to make my decision,” Spencer told the club website.
Her decision was made based on the upward trajectory of the club since gaining promotion to the top flight in 2019. They have finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in their first two seasons in the WSL and are currently in fifth place in the league table this season.
It was that continued growth that Spencer said sold her on continuing the work that head coach Rehanne Skinner started two years ago.
“When Rehanne spoke to me it was a no-brainer for me. Just the direction the club is going in and the staff and the players and the fans equally have been amazing. They have made it really easy for me and I feel really comfortable and it really feels like a home now being here for three years now,” Spencer said. “Being here for that long it just feels like the right place for me to be.”
Spencer struggled for playing time during her two years at Chelsea between 2016 and 2018 and during her one-year stint with West Ham from 2018 to 2019. Spencer has played nine league games this season and 12 in all competitions. Internationally, she has started three of the four first-round World Cup qualifiers for the Reggae Girlz, keeping two clean sheets.
Spencer says that she is seeing signs of the club’s progress and is looking forward to more growth in the next two years.
“To watch it slowly unfold has been exciting and you are kind of waiting patiently to see what’s next. I think we are all in it together which is the main thing and we all want to strive to push the club forward,” Spencer said.
