THE GLEANER could not go into this week’s World Athletics Championships without finding out what our neighbours thought about Jamaica’s medal chances.

Many have focused in on the women to sprint the country’s way towards something resembling the 12 medals it copped in 2019.

But … there’s many a slip between the cup and the lip.

Question: How many medals do you think Jamaica will win at the 2022 World Championships?

Marlon Spencer:

“I’m thinking for 2022, we can look at about 15 medals. I think we will win about seven gold, for silver, maybe about five, and for the bronze, about three. Definitely Elaine Thompson for the gold in the women’s 100, I’ll bet on Elaine Thompson. Not sure about Yohan Blake. Maybe in the 100, a silver. And for the 200, maybe a silver also.

Andrew Anderson:

“Looking at at least nine medals. I would say, in terms of gold medals now, just thinking that the women alone will be dominating. We don’t really have a men’s team right now to actually compete with the other teams. So, I can’t really put a number on it. Yohan Blake may get silver in the 100, but for the 200 metres, he’s not that fit.”

Kadeem Francis:

“The medal count for me would be about eight medals. Of that eight medals, four or three gold medals. All being well, and all the women are fit, it should be another one, two, three. So it’s between Elaine and Shelly for the gold, then Shericka following closely. And for Yohan in the 100 metre, even with God’s help, no, in neither (100m, 200m). He will make the 100m finals but he won’t medal.

Cornel McBean:

It will be a clean sweep me seh, enuh. Everything. USA nuh have nothing fi get, I swear them nuh have nutt’n a get. We a guh get more than 12 medals man, clean sweep we going for, man. With Shelly, Elaine, Shericka, what a battlefield? Dah battlefield deh mad, enuh! Three nice women, so may the best one win. One, two, three me seh. Two gold and a silver we may get to. Me wah the best for them, so clean sweep for the World Champs, USA nuh have nutt’n, and the rest a the country dem, a fight dem a fight. USA nuh have nutt’n a get.

Tacania Howell:

“My predictions are they are going to win all medals in every event they participate in. In the women’s 100m, I’m expecting the great Elaine Thompson Herah to win. Mi just basically expect them to go out, perform and do them best and take home the medals. As long as Yohan come in the finals, even if him come last, he’s still appreciated and loved, the Jamaican fans love him same way.”

Dane Lynch:

“I think we will win more than 12 medals. I can’t give proper readings as to which we will win right now, but once I see how far we go as in the semi-finals then I can predict, but definitely 12, or more than 12.

I’m a big Shericka Jackson fan, I chose Shericka because I’ve been observing her performances over the years and she waited. She is performing now, so she is due whatever reward she get.”
