No honours for Jamaicans after successful CWC
THERE WERE no honours for Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz at the end of the Concacaf Women’s Championship (CWC) in Mexico with the lion’s share of accolades going to players from the finalists, the United States and Canada.
According to Concacaf, there were a number of standout performances over the two weeks at both the individual and collective levels.
Canada won the Fair Player Award, while the Young Player Award went to Haiti’s Melchie Dumornay, who provided a headache for opposing defences. Haiti earned a first-ever tournament victory against Mexico. It was also Dumornay’s playmaking that led to a penalty in Haiti’s opener versus the United States, while against Mexico she completed 30 of 31 passes. Dumornay then completed the tournament by twice hitting the post in the group stage finale against Jamaica.
While the tournament talked about the goalkeeping of Jamaica’s Rebecca Spencer, the Best goalkeeper award went to Canada’s Kailen Sheridan. Sheridan finished the tournament with just one goal allowed, as Canada finished as runners-up. The 27-year-old recorded three clean sheets and made seven saves in four matches.
The Top Goalscorer Award went to Canada’s Julia Grosso, who finished the tournament with three goals in Canada’s run to the final. Most impressive was that Grosso’s three goals came in just 172 minutes of action, helping the reigning Olympic champions qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The United States’ Alex Morgan was adjudged to be worthy of the Best Player Award. The 2018 CWC Top Goalscorer Award winner took home the prize of the 2022 tournament’s best player after scoring the winning goal in Monday’s final, coolly converting a penalty in the 78th minute. Morgan finished the tournament with three goals to help the US claim their ninth CWC title.
