HARD-HITTING Melbourne Cricket Club opening batsman Leroy Lugg says he is mentally prepared and is eyeing a fruitful Caribbean Premier League (CPL) debut season with the St Lucia Kings, when the CPL tournament bowls off later this summer.

Speaking with The Gleaner, the former West Indies Under-19 batsman pointed to a solid average and strike rate as some of the main goals he wants to achieve in his first season.

“Well, it’s my first season and I’m putting in a lot of work right now. I know that I might not play a lot of games but I’m thinking about playing every game. I would like to score three to four half centuries and finish the tournament with an average of 30 to 35, inclusive of a strike rate above 130,” Lugg stated.

The 25-year-old Lugg also cited other areas of his game other than his powerful hitting that he hopes to improve when the tournament bowls off on August 30.

“Well, my fitness because the last game I played I had a hamstring injury so I’ve been working on that. I’m also working on my fielding as well, trying to improve that along with my strike rotation. I want to improve my strike rotation and not just focus on hitting boundaries,” Lugg added.

Lugg, who opened the batting for the Jamaica Scorpions in the recently concluded regional four-day tournament alongside West Indies player John Campbell, is known for his powerful hitting, and when he was asked who is his biggest T-20 inspiration, the answer came in one response “Chris Gayle”.

The St Lucia Kings, who are captained by South African Faf du Plessis, will be looking to go all the way this year as they were beaten in last season’s final by the Trinbago Knight Riders.
