I Am Fred (right), ridden by Christopher Mamdeen, wears down Mahogany to win the None Such Sprint Trophy, a three-year-old and Upwards Open Allowance/Graded Stakes event, over six furlongs at Caymanas Park yesterday.

UNITED STATES-bred I AM FRED wore down topweight MAHOGANY in the last hop at the wire to land yesterday’s None Such Sprint, handing leading trainer Jason DaCosta a three-timer on the 10-race card.

Racing third into the lane while stablemate MAKEUPARTIST kept MAHOGANY busy on the lead, 8-1 chance I AM FRED charged along the rail with Christopher Mamdeen to challenge midway the stretch run with his 16lb advantage in the six-furlong sprint.

After being dragged into splits of 22.0 and 45.0 for the first quarter and half-mile, respectively, 1-9 favourite MAHOGANY dug deep inside the final furlong with Dane Dawkins but found the weight overwhelming, going down by a short head in a fast 1:11.0.

DaCosta dominated the card with two other impressive winners for champion owner Carlton Watson, two-year-old maiden THALITA at five furlongs round and US-bred three-year-old filly, MADELYN’S SUNSHINE, also at five round.

Champion jockey Anthony Thomas was aboard both DaCosta fillies, reducing Dawkins’ lead atop the standings to six heading into this afternoon’s 10-race meet.
