CALCULUS, last year’s Jamaica Derby winner, went on an afternoon stroll in yesterday’s Kenneth Mattis Memorial at nine furlongs and 25 yards, dismissing stablemate AWESOME TREASURE a half-mile out before staying on in workmanlike fashion to easily beat MARQUESAS.

The four-year-old colt was handed the overnight-allowance event on a platter by the conditions booklet, after campaigning among open allowance and graded stakes runners since the back end of last year, winning two grade-one events in the first quarter of this season.

AWESOME TREASURE led the six-horse field from the gate with 1-9 favourite CALCULUS stalking before taking charge leaving the half-mile marker, after which the writing was on the wall, MARQUESAS flattered by the winning margin of two and a half lengths.

The 10-race card was dominated by champion trainer Anthony Nunes, who closed the card with a hat-trick of upsetters – HOWILOOKIN at 37-1, EL CID stunning at 11-1 and 8-1 chance JUNGLE BOOGIE in the night pan.

Punters playing the Twilight 6 stood no chance in the late bet. Prior to Nunes’ stinging hat-trick, Steven Todd opened the late bet with 41-1 shocker AWESOME CHOICE in the fifth event, which was followed by Carl Anderson’s TOCATBETHEGLORY striking at 55-1 in the sixth.

Tevin Foster was aboard HOWILOOKIN and EL CID for Nunes, who also saddled the respective runner-ups, WOWZA and GT BOY. Claiming rider Carlton Blake closed Nunes’ hat-trick astride JUNGLE BOOGIE.
