Champions give thumbs up to 2022 Jamaica Open Golf
The 2022 Jamaica Open Golf Championship, which was held at Tryall Golf Club in Hanover, culminated with an exciting final-day finish on Tuesday with American pro-Patrick Cover staving off late challenges from compatriot Michael Maguire and Josh Anderson to claim the US$20,000 winner’s prize money and the Jamaica Open title.
Cover, who was securing the open for the second time after winning in 2019, said his win was well-deserved, and he is relishing the opportunity to come back again to go for a hat-trick of titles.
“I plan to challenge for the hat-trick of titles. If I am not playing in a PGA tour event, I will be here,” said Cover.
Cover ended the 54-hole tournament with a 13 under par total of 203 to win by four strokes, with Anderson finishing in second place with a nine under par 207 and the late-surging Michael Maguire third with an eight under par 208.
For Cover, the final day summed up the competitive nature of the prestigious tournament which saw 47 pro golfers completing the championship.
“It’s great and I love coming down to Jamaica. I love this golf course and I plan to come back for as long as I can,” Cover added.
Jamaican Justin Burrowes was once again at his imperious best as he took home the amateur title following his three over par 219.
Burrowes, who successfully defended his title, says his game is maturing nicely as he embarks on bigger things in the sport.
“It feels great to win another title and I played some solid golf despite not scoring as well as I wanted to. I still played really good and overall. I am pleased with where my game is at and I feel like I have something to build on,” said Burrowes.
President of the Jamaica Golf Association Jodi Munn-Barrow said the tournament was a huge success following upon the great news that title sponsors Agua Bay Resorts have already committed to extending their sponsorship for the tournament.
“It was a great week and very exciting. The golf was at the highest level that we have seen for a while and we are already looking towards a bigger and better 2023 open.”
