Scorpions skipper ends Super50 as leading run scorer
HAVING waited a decade to lift another Regional Super50 title, the Rovman Powell-led Jamaica Scorpions also finished atop the batting and bowling departments.
Captain Powell was the leading scorer for the 2022 season after tallying 346 runs, four clear of Trinidad and Tobago’s Nicholas Pooran. Powell hit one century and a half-century and ended with an average of 69.20. He had a top score of 105 not-out.
Powell became the first Jamaican since Chris Gayle back in 2008 to top the batting in a regional limited overs tournament. The hard-hitting 29-year-old Powell credits his recent success with spending time focusing on batting against spin bowling.
“I think it’s just spending time at the crease. Over the past year or so, I’ve done a lot of work, especially batting against spin so it’s good to see that it’s bearing fruit now. I came in the competition with an aim to top the batting and spending a lot of time at the crease, and I think I did that,” said Powell.
The Jamaica Scorpions’ fast bowling pair of Nicholson Gordon and Odean Smith ended on a three-way tie with Trinidad and Tobago’s Shannon Gabriel for most wickets, at 15 each.
Powell admits that both seamers were very important to the team’s success as he often relied on them whenever he needed a breakthrough.
“They were very, very important. Important in the sense where every time I needed a breakthrough, I gave them the ball and they delivered throughout the competition. As a captain it is good when you find bowlers that give you wickets in crucial times of the game,” Powell cited.
Powell, who earlier this year had captained the Jamaica Tallawahs to the Caribbean Premier League title, was lifting his first Regional Super50 crown and he hopes this will be the start of a successful run.
“During the journey they (fans) became a little flustered and cursed us on social media, but I guess that’s part of the sport. It’s good that we finally delivered the CPL title after so many years, and the CG Super50 title after a decade. It’s a very good feeling, hope they enjoy it and I hope it’s the start of something successful,” he added.
